Cognition and Learning

Cognition and learning is one of four main areas of need as laid out in the SEND Code of Practice 2014.

A child or young person may have a specific learning difficulty and experience problems with reading and spelling (dyslexia), mathematics (dyscalculia), coordination (dyspraxia) or writing (dysgraphia). Other difficulties may occur, for example, working memory, attention, organisation skills, problem solving, comprehension etc.

Those children with more severe learning difficulties may also experience difficulty learning basic skills, which may then lead to affect their overall development.

At Christ Church additional support may be required if a child is struggling with retaining information or learns at a slower pace, for example. Intervention programmes in Maths and English are provided to support individual children who may need a more personalised activity, however, if a child continues to struggle to make progress further support and assessment will be provided through external agencies, including SENAAT and an Educational Psychologist.

Following the 'assess-plan-do-review' cycle, children with cognition and learning needs will be monitored and supported through a range of methods, including: individualised School Support Plans, specialist resources, specialist teaching strategies and additional targeted intervention, further details of which can be found by clicking on the images below.
