Welcome to the Reception Class Page!
This page is intended to give parents and carers up-to-date information about what is happening in Reception.
We understand that starting Reception is a big step for children and their parents so we aim to ease this transition as much as possible. The Early Years team are keen to help and support our families as much as possible, so if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with us.

Reception Autumn 1 Curriculum Overview
Reading
In Reception the children will start to learn to read through our Read Write Inc Phonics scheme. As the children learn each letter sound they will receive a flash card to add to their phonics key ring and will work through a series of initial sound work sheets. It is important that the children secure these initial sounds as soon as possible in order for them to move on to reading words and captions.
It is important to encourage your child to read each night but also for you to read to your child too. Reading is a very important part of learning as a confident reader is likely to become a life long learner.
Children will bring their book bags home on a Monday and must be returned to school every Friday.
Uniform
Learning in the early years is active and continuous and the children access both our indoor and outdoor provision throughout the day. In order to ensure your child is ready for all our learning activities all of the time, we encourage an active wear approach to our school uniform which consists of:
- White t-shirt/polo (with or without the school logo)
- Black or navy leggings/joggers
- Red hoody (with or without the school logo)
- Trainers/pumps with velcro fasteners to enable the children to put on/ take off independently
- A pair of wellington boots (to remain in school)

Clubs
At Christ Church, we aim to offer an array of clubs and activities for our pupils. All information regarding clubs is relayed to parents via SIMS InTouch allowing you the opportunity to sign your child up instantly. All clubs are free of charge but may be limited by numbers.
Help at Home
At Christ Church we understand the vital part parents play in the education of their children. We believe that parents are a child's first educators and we aim to work very closely with our parents to support their child's education.
Each child has got their own Tapestry online profile. This allows parents to view the learning that their child is accessing at school. We encourage parents to interact with observations uploaded by school staff and also upload observations of the children's learning from home.
In Reception, we use the Ruth Miskin videos to support parents
when helping their child with their Read Write Inc. Phonics at home. We also signpost parents to the Ruth Miskin website where there are various helpful vidoes and tutorials to help parents and children practise together at home.
Oxford Owl is a fantastic website with lots of information, resources and e-books. It allows parents to gain more information about reading, phonics and maths. There are also a range of ebooks for children and parents to access at home.
